Have you ever wondered, how does God speak to us? I get asked a lot, does God still speak? Can God speak to me? How can I hear God? How do I know God is speaking to me?
Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. – Isaiah 30:21 (NLT)
God will speak to you in a manner alike with your person, a way you can understand and appreciate. If you are naturally an outgoing person who enjoys nature, you may find that you understand God better through nature. So you could be walking on the road and God can use the way water drops on leaves to explain how his mercies are never ending. I’m a really intellectual person who finds a lot of joy and enjoyment in books and studying so I normally get instruction through reading and listening to various material such as books and the bible.
For example, the very first time God spoke to me; I had just got born again a while back and had joined a fellowship and cultivated the habit of daily quiet time and prayer. I used the Open Heavens devotional by Pastor E.A Adeboye for my quiet time and I had asked God a question about something that was happening to me in my opening prayer. When I was done praying, I opened the devotional to start reading and the very page and line that caught my eye in that page was the direct answer to my question. It was just there in front of me, in human language (lol), clear, straight to the point and easy to understand. He also spoke to me through conversations in my early days of getting born again and seeking his direction. It happened that I pray about something in my room without telling anyone and I go out to class or to see a friend and in our conversation, the person says something very random and in that moment, it’s just like BAM! That’s the answer and it so clearly answers the question. A very strange occurrence at the time was speaking to me through me! I would find myself talking about things I have no idea about or giving someone advice or just gisting and while am talking I would say something that is an answer to my question and I would literally just stop and be like where did that come from (lol).
The way God speaks to us progresses as we grow up spiritually so as a new believer, he spoke to me through devotionals, conversations etc. but now, although he still speaks through those mediums, he now speaks also through meditation on his word. How it works is; I take a scripture concerning an issue I’m having or just for deeper understanding and while praying in the spirit, thinking about it and being quiet; I’d get deeper understanding about that verse. It seems like your eyes get open all of a sudden and you ‘know’ and ‘see’ that scripture differently from how you did before; and it usually comes with joy (more like exclamation).
Key points about how God speaks;
- God wants to speak to you much more that you have the desire to listen.
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. – Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV)
Many of us are not sure whether God still speaks or even wants to speak to us. This is the very first mindset we must conquer and overcome. God is not a tyrant who has a set of rules you must follow, waiting for you to fail so he can boast and punish you. No! You must see God as your father that loves you so much to give all he has for you, he wants to communicate with you, tell you wants on his mind as well as hear you too, he wants to pass the answer to your questions to you, and he just needs you to listen. God’s desire for us to know him is very profound we can’t begin to describe or comprehend it. He said nothing can separate us from his love – nothing!
- The way God speaks is dependent on him.
A lot of times we read or hear about someone’s experience and we covet it. You read that someone heard an audible voice and you begin to covet and wish for the same experience. No! God will speak to you and lead you the way he wants to, seeking a specific way for him to speak to you is setting that way as an idol in your eyes before God. All you need to do is desire that he speaks to you and just rest and let him speak the way he sees fit. God can speak through music, nature, people, books, inanimate things and many other ways that we don’t even know yet but how he does it is totally up to him.
- Hearing God is a habitual thing.
All night long I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek for God. – Isaiah 26:9a (NLT)
Your desire to hear God must not be a once in a while thing, you have to form a relationship with God so as to get accustomed to hearing him. A way of building this relationship is by studying his word, praying regularly, fasting, spending time in his presence and just waiting on him. When this becomes a habit, you will begin to hear him and talk back to him the way you will do a friend who was seating close to you.
- As you hear, Obey!
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let [them] slip. – Hebrews 2:1
Many of us want to hear God but we don’t want to obey him. A lot of times someone knows they are wrong but in a bid to search for something to allow them sin without feeling guilty, they begin to seek Gods voice. God doesn’t speak to people with disobedient and rebellious hearts. For example, a lady is considering a relationship with an unbeliever and although she knows the bible says we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, she ignores that word and begins to ask for God to tell her what to do. She is already wrong! The first way God speaks to us is through his word, you can’t ignore the written word and expect to hear something else. God is his word, as he brings scriptures to your mind and as he guides you to what his will is, you need to take the word seriously and obey it immediately.
- Hearing God requires faith.
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. – Hebrews 11:6 (NLT)
You must believe that he speaks and he wants to speak to you. You must expect it as your right as a child of God and you need that faith to step out when his leading requires you to. Whenever you are facing any issues, pray about it and ask God to reveal his will to you concerning that situation, then open your bible and get to work! Have faith that he heard you and he is going to speak to you, then begin to search for scriptures surrounding what you are asking (use Google and concordances), get messages (Use YouTube), buy books on the topic. God will in fact speak to you through these mediums and confirm them to you through his peace in your heart.
Let’s approach God in confidence and ask for him to lead us today!
