We Are Children of God!

We know and believe that God is awesome; he is great, powerful, all-knowing, all-sufficient, loving, mighty, kind etc. We worship him and serve him but have you ever sat down and considered the enormity of calling yourself the child of God?

You are the children of the LORD your God …. For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth – Deuteronomy 14:1-2

We were created by God in his own image according to his desire, he made us. We were made to function like God on earth with full dominion and authority. We are Spirit beings who can connect to our father who is a Spirit and can’t be seen with natural eyes.

Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. – Psalms 100:3

In this present world, to be the child of the President or even a celebrity is a BIG deal. You have guards following you everywhere, people respect you, listen to you and look up to you; you have your own fans. You are treated like a special person with you have your own cars, apartment, planes and everything you need. As the child of a President you can’t just fool around with anyone because you know you have been put on a pedestal and the world is watching. Many of us wish we born to families like the Obamas or Dangotes or Buharis or even families of celebrities like Beyonce or David Beckham. We treat the children of those people with special care, follow them on social media and try to be their friends but how much more ourselves!

Our God, who is also our father is the creator and controller of heaven and earth. He decides who lives or dies, he holds time in his hands, he controls seasons, he has the heart of presidents and important people in his hands, only him is able to promote or demote, he is mighty above all. We have the privilege to call him Abba Father, he is with us every time. The Bible tells us that his mind is full of us (What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? – Psalm 8:4), his spirit in us is jealous.

Sadly, many times we forget of whose child we are. We cower before false gods and kneel before men. We refer to ourselves as poor and hopeless, we forsake our own mercies and neglect the grace of God. Unlike the prodigal son, we refuse to come back home when we stray. We struggle or ‘hustle’ to make it on our own. And all the while, our lovingly father is calling and saying “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” – Matthew 11:28, he is saying I suffered and died so you won’t have to suffer, I overcame the world for you, everything is yours (“Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours” – 1 Corinthians 3:21). You just need to return home and stay home so I can show how to get access to it.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name – John 1:12

We are children of God by our very nature but we need to receive him. He stands before the door and knocks (“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me” – Revelation 3:20); we need to invite him into our house and dwell with him. He is not a pesky parent that will stick his nose up and down our business, No! He is the King of Kings, a gentleman, he is civil; he won’t force you to talk to him, call him or invite him. But he is always just a word away. He is eager to come in and pour the fullness of his love and being to you.

He wants to show you his love for you! You need to let him.

Just like our African parents will tell us when we are leaving home; today and always “Don’t forget whose child you are!” As we go about our daily business, let’s not get carried away by the hustle and bustle and emptiness of this world that we neglect to say hello to our father.

You can start by saying “Hello, Father. Thank you for always loving me, I love you too. Come in and dine with me. Teach me how to love and please you. Show me the secrets of the kingdom and help me walk in who you made me to be. I thank you because you always hear me”

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God – Romans 8:16
